It controls the flow of blood, the elimination of waste<br>products, the act of breathing, and the movement of thoughts in the mind.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Welcome to the second article in the <strong>Know Your Prakriti series.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is considered the leader of the<br>three doshas (energies or energetic principles in the body) as Pitta and Kapha cannot move or exist<br>without it. It is therefore imperative that Vata is brought back into balance whenever it is disturbed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"296\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/aayushbharat.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Vata-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3597\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ayushbharat.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Vata-1.png 296w, https:\/\/ayushbharat.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Vata-1-234x300.png 234w, https:\/\/ayushbharat.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Vata-1-117x150.png 117w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 296px) 100vw, 296px\" \/><figcaption>Vata &#8211; Ether + Air<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You need to balance the movement of Vata if many of the following conditions are present:<\/strong><br>\u2022 Your skin or hair is dry, rough and thin.<br>\u2022 You feel cold easily or have poor circulation with cold hands and feet.<br>\u2022 You are chronically underweight and find it difficult to gain weight.<br>\u2022 Your mind is constantly anxious, restless and agitated and you are prone to worry and fear.<br>\u2022 You experience constipation or have frequent flatulence.<br>\u2022 You suffer from insomnia or have unsettled sleep and disturbing dreams.<br>\u2022 You suffer from vaginal dryness or menstrual cramps and PMT.<br>\u2022 You have spells of forgetfulness and absent-mindedness.<br>\u2022 You experience discomfort or stiffness in the joints or lower back pain.<br>\u2022 You easily become fatigued and have poor endurance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tips for balancing Vata:<\/strong><br>\u2022 Follow a Vata balancing diet favouring cooked foods rather than raw foods and salads.<br>\u2022 Go to bed early bedtime and have lots of rest.<br>\u2022 Diffuse calming and grounding aromatic oils or incense into your home and office. Orange,<br>geranium, lavender, basil, spruce &amp; fir are excellent in this regard.<br>\u2022 Maintain a regular daily routine by integrating the \u2018Daily Routine\u2019 (see later section).<br>\u2022 Give yourself an Abhyanga massage using warm sesame oil each morning.<br>\u2022 Ensure you have regular, daily elimination. Triphala herbal formula helps in this regard.<br>\u2022 Stay warm, especially in cold, windy weather.<br>\u2022 Take gentle walks in the countryside to calm and balance the mind.<br>\u2022 Wear calm, soothing colours such as pastels, green or brown.<br>\u2022 Do not overexert and rest whenever the body becomes tired or over stimulated<br>\u2022 Relax often by practising meditation, pranayama, Yoga or Tai Chi.<br>\u2022 Read light, humorous, feel-good novels and turn the television off one hour before bed.<br>\u2022 Take up walking, fishing, bird-watching or gardening for general relaxation.<br>\u2022 Take up writing, drawing, painting or acting to balance your creative energies.<br>\u2022 Avoid excessive talking and try to have a day of silence each week.<br>\u2022 Wrap up warm and keep dry in the winter &#8211; cover your head on cold, windy days.<br>\u2022 Avoid loud, noisy environments<br>\u2022 Rest for short periods throughout the day<br>\u2022 Avoid excessive use of VDU displays<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Vata balancing diet<\/strong><br>\u2022 Favour warm, hearty, nourishing foods with added butter\/oil \u2013 favour salty, sour and sweet tastes.<br>\u2022 Try and reduce light, dry, cold foods and pungent, bitter and astringent tastes<br>\u2022 Hot, milky, creamy cereals (wheat, oatmeal or rice), soups and stews are all very good for pacifying Vata.<br>\u2022 All dairy products are good (ideally organic and unpasturised) \u2013 milk should always be boiled first.<br>\u2022 Oils are good but favour ghee, coconut oil, olive oil, Udo\u2019s oil, flax\/pumpkin oil and sesame oil.<br>\u2022 Reduce your intake of light, dry, cold foods such as crackers, nuts, seeds and salads.<br>\u2022 Take nuts and seeds in small quantities only \u2013 they are best freshly ground with oil added.<br>\u2022 Reduce the intake of all bean products except tofu, mung beans, mung dhal and red lentils.<br>\u2022 The best grains are rice and wheat but you can take barley, corn, millet, buckwheat, rye and oats in moderation.<br>\u2022 Favour stewed and well ripened, sweet or sour fruits but reduce the intake of dry or light fruits such as apples, pears,<br>pomegranates, cranberries, and dried fruits (if uncooked). Dried fruits are good if they are cooked after soaking<br>overnight.<br>\u2022 Sweeteners are good (in moderation), especially jaggary, honey, maple syrup and algarve.<br>\u2022 Vegetables should be cooked and not raw.
